Amsterdam, Netherlands, 25 September 2025 – TomTom (TOM2), the location technology specialist, today announced the launch of a new product, Tom by TomTom, a road alert assistant created to enhance the driver experience by delivering only essential alerts. Combined with the new TomTom app, a free driving application, the two products create a complete solution, helping drivers stay informed of unexpected situations on the road.

Tom uses LED lights and an audio buzzer to inform drivers of speed cameras, road hazards and traffic emitting a combination of sound and light signals. Its screen-free, voice-free design minimizes distractions, enhancing driver confidence and focus.

Tom autostarts the moment a drive commences, ensuring drivers receive essential road alerts without the need for planned routes. The device receives all its data and information from the TomTom app, which runs in the background when Tom starts.

For drives that still require routing, TomTom app completes Tom by offering enhanced navigation, enabling accurate turn-by-turn guidance. The app relies on TomTom’s precise maps with continuous updates and accurate speed limits, while also providing highly comprehensive speed camera data in Europe and North America.

Built on more than three decades of specialized mapping expertise, these products leverage data from over 600 million connected devices powered by TomTom technology, providing real-time road insights. This vast community allows TomTom to capture billions of data daily, offering a rich understanding of road conditions that generate highly precise traffic information and dynamic routing.

“We are proud to introduce our latest TomTom app and Tom by TomTom—two new solutions that redefine the driving experience,” said Pim Spaanderman, Managing Director for Consumer, TomTom. “At TomTom, we aim to provide our drivers with tools to improve their time on the road and prioritize safety, using intelligence to empower confident and easy navigation. Leveraging over 30 years of mapping expertise and millions of insights from our community, we’ve developed two new products that work together to provide drivers with unmatched navigation, real-time road awareness, and critical alerts."

TomTom app is free to download on Android and iOS.

Tom by TomTom will be available for pre-order from 25 September exclusively via TomTom.com, with wider availability through Amazon and selected retail partners in October at a price of €79,99 VAT included.

How do you use the Tom with the TomTom app? Do you still need a subscription for the app?

So basically the same as Ooono No2 for the same price.

Pro for TomTom: One app for both speed warnings and routing. However, as AmiGO is lacking offline maps, you will need both apps when you want to have offline routing - with is basically the same as TomTom GO + Ooono app.

Pro for Ooono: The database of Ooono is much more accurate than the one of TomTom, especially because of the high number of users in Europe, and (I assume) some cooperations to exchange data.

Further conclusion: Again some more feature development of TomTom AmiGO (the "new" TomTom app), and I assume it will supersede GO completely - sooner or later.

Can you buy it in the US?
Not at present, and I'd find it highly unlikely that they'd do so. They've abandoned their entire hardware distribution channel here, and it would cost them to set it up again.

I bought Tom today and have just road tested it. It paired with my iPhone and the set up was straightforward, but when I used it in the car it didn’t work at all, despite it being connected and demonstrating that it was by emitting a green light every 10 seconds. It failed to alert to any mobile cameras, despite me driving past various fixed cameras that have been in place for years.
Is there an issue with it not working properly in the UK? I like the idea of the device, but if it doesn’t work I will have to return it for a refund.
Can anyone help?

Yes. Everything appeared to work fine with the pairing and set up and the App shows my Tom is connected. The Tom displays the intermittent green light to show that it’s working, but it doesn’t display anything else when I’m driving, like speed cameras, traffic works, or giving a warning if you go above the speed limit, even though all of these alerts are ticked on the App.
Have I just got a faulty Tom, or is there a more widespread UK issue with the device?

Have you configured your smartphone's Bluetooth settings? Like Location.
And have you allowed location access to Always?

YES! Everything was set up correctly. The issue is that the device doesn’t alert you to any speed cameras, obstructions, or traffic delays when you are driving rendering it useless and not fit for purpose.

Both the TomTom app and my TomTom GO 6100 detect all the speed cameras I drive past that Tom misses. There is literally no reaction to anything from the Tom device, apart from it blinking green every 10 seconds to show that it is connected and should be working.
Have other users had similar issues, as I have not seen any ratings, or independent reviews, online.

There is a video on how to set it up here
The manual for it is here https://download.tomtom.com/open/manuals/Tom_by_TomTom/refman/Tom-by-TomTom-UM-en-gb.pdf
An explanation of the various flashes can be found here https://help.tomtom.com/hc/en-gb/articles/29251270110354-Explanation-of-Tom-s-colour-signals

@AFA1 Tap the menu button, check that the bottom item "Tom" is showing connected and then tap that
the subsequent menu has an "Alerts tutorial" item tap that and your Tom should flash blue, if you miss it tap ""Play on device" to repeat. Swipe left to see the others or the X top right to exit the tutorial

There would be no point, as I’ve returned the item for a refund, as it simply didn’t work. Very disappointed with TomTom and the level of customer support, which is pretty much ineffectual.
