Subject: TomTom Carminat Renault 2012 – red cross and bootloop after update

Hi everyone,
I need help with my TomTom Carminat navigation system (Renault 2012). After the latest update via TomTom HOME, the device stopped working properly.

When I start the car, I either get a red cross screen with a message to remove the SD card, or the system enters a bootloop – showing the TomTom logo and hourglass, then restarting over and over again.

I’ve already tried:

  • removing and reinserting the SD card,
  • resetting the device,
  • re-installing data using TomTom HOME,

…but nothing helped so far.
Has anyone experienced a similar issue with Carminat and managed to fix it? I’d really appreciate any advice.

Thanks in advance!
Pablo

Copy the file mapsettings.cfg (it will be in the folder that contains your map data, probably Western_Europe_2GB or some similar folder name) to some place on your PC for temporary safekeeping, and then delete it from the Carminat card.

See if that helps the boot cycle any.

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestion. I tried removing the mapsettings.cfg file as you described, but unfortunately it didn't help – the system is still stuck in the boot loop or shows the red cross screen.

To better explain the issue, I’ve taken some photos of what I see on the screen.

Thanks again for your help!

Best regards, Pablo

Software problem?

Delete the application from your SD card and computer, then present the SD card to TomTom Home.
TomTom Home should offer you an update.

If you need a backup on your computer, copy and paste the application onto your SD card.

Just to clarify — do you mean I should format the SD card completely before reconnecting it to TomTom HOME, or just delete the application files manually?
I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing.

Thanks again!
Edit I deleted the app from sd card and now Tomtom home dont recognize the card

Do NOT format the card! Your maps are on that card, and cannot be retrieved from TomTom's server without payment!
In fact, I hope you have at some time backed up the entire card to your PC somewhere.

When you "deleted the app", what was it that you deleted?

Thanks for the warning — don’t worry, I didn’t format the SD card.

Just to clarify:

I did not delete the application from the SD card.

What I actually did was uninstall the TomTom HOME program from sd card (TomTomHOME.exe).

I also have a full backup of the SD card saved on my PC.

The issue still persists: either the red cross shows up or the device enters a boot loop with the hourglass.

Any suggestions on what I should try next?

Thanks again
for your help!

Was your full backup made before all of these troubles began?

It's very unlikely that the bootloader was updated, so it may just be a simple matter of reverting to your old backup copy for now, and then we can work through any update issues.

The only file you need to delete on your SD card is on the computer via Tomtom Home.

Yes, I did make a full backup before things got really bad.
However, during the update of TomTom LIVE on the device, the system shut down unexpectedly, and that's when the problems started.

Because of that, I believe there's a chance the bootloader may have been affected or corrupted, not just the software.

Let me know what you recommend next.

If you have a full backup of your SD, why don't you restore that backup to your SD?

I have the same problem. No matter SD card is in or out. All the time boot loop with hourglass. I think the problem is with firmware, navcore, etc. Device is stuck and does not read the card.
I am waiting for the answer from TomTom support.
I have read in this forum that one guy drove about 3 hours without card and device fixed somehow showing "no card insterted". Then he put in the card and problem was resolved.

If you think it's the NavCore issue, either copy and paste the NavCore from your backup onto your computer.
Or delete it from the SD card and your computer, then connect your SD card to your TomTom Home account.
Home should normally prompt you to download it again.

It could be that your SD card is faulty, so buy a new SD card and download your backup to the SD card.

As i said before no matter what it is in the SD card because the device does not try to read the card. Instead device try to boot itself but loop and loop, and loop...
Correct me if i am wrong.

The firmware that your device is trying to boot is located ON the card. When that fails, around we go again.

So if no SD card inserted why the device shows hourglass instead of message "No card inserted" ?
You'd have to ask the guy who wrote the bootloader code.

Also need to ask -- do you always use the "Remove SD card" option (page 2 of the menu options) when removing the card from the device?

As we've noted, the device firmware is on the card. If you plug it into your PC, Home should be able to see it. It will be a file in the root of the card called "ttsystem". That's the file that may need to be replaced using Home.

Firmaware crashed due to interuption while updating. Not when removing from device. But i know that menu option.

Tomtom support told me format the card and put it into car for initializing. But it not worked for me. No files were created on sd after initializing.

Could it be your SD card that's having a problem?
So, buy a new SD card, format it, and then insert it into Carminat so it copies the two files needed for recognition.

Or the other solution is to take the 1,706 items from the backup and copy them to your SD card.
