Tomtom and Microsoft Streets and Trips?

Is there a way to connect the tomtom to a laptop and use Microsoft Streets and Trips or some similar software? I've been seeing that most programs require NMEA 2.0, whatever that is.

I'm afraid TT's software works only with maps provided by TomTom.
