how can this be changed without the places being deleted

If you have changed your email address or changed internet provider, you have no choice but to reset the device to factory settings and therefore lose your saved locations.

The email address you use does not have to be a 'current' address, or even a real address - it only needs to be formed correctly as an email address.

So if you have been using (e-mail address removed) in the past, you can continue to use that as your TomTom login even if you have abandoned that email address for other purposes. All you will miss might be some future advertisement that TomTom sends to that email address.
