TomTom Model(s)
Start 50
Hi,

My son bought a new Tom Tom Touch 50 3 weeks ago to use with his new car, which is a 2013 Hyundai i10. And I have found that it will not work with the car, I have used the supplied USB cable and the cigar socket adapter. But I have found that it will not power the Tom Tom, as my son has charged the device on his computer.

He has setup all of the updates as instructed with it, tried to use it with his car, the cable and the black supplied cigar adapter. But he has found that the TOM Tom just dies once the battery power runs out, as it is not being charged by the factory supplied pieces of equipment.

I have tested the device and attachments in my 2005 Ford Focus, and I found that the Tom Tom has the battery icon change to a lightning symbol. So I can presume that it is charging, as the light on the cigar lighter socket adapter also lights up.

But when I use the same setup on my son's Hyundai i10 car, the cigar lighter socket adapter does NOT light up. And the battery icon stays solid, and gradually gets smaller as the battery power is used up. So the Tom Tom is NOT being charged, and it shuts down once the battery power runs out.

I have also used another cigar lighter adapter I have in his car, which I use to charge my mobile phone in my car. This lights up in his car, so it proves that the cigar socket works. But when I again connect the USB cable to it, it does not have enough power to charge the Tom Tom device. And again it drains down as the Tom Tom battery dies.

I have also found that the USB cable must be ok, as it works on my son's computer as it charges the Tom Tom. Also the Tom Tom device itself must be ok, as it holds the charge from the computer. But, for some reason it cannot work in my son's car.

So I am looking for advice on how I can use the Tom Tom device, with my son's car? Because at the moment it is useless, as it cannot be powered from a Hyundai i10. And we are considering returning it to Argos, as it is not compatible with the car.

Tom Tom details:

App Version: 16.201.2572.311
Maps: V976.7830

Some cig lighter outlets simply don't provide sufficient power to both get the device running AND charge the battery. Check back into this thread to see what other advice will appear in the next day or so.

Also, some cig lighter outlets don't precisely conform to standards of most auto manufacturers. Is the other cig lighter adapter you used in his car the same length as the TomTom or slightly longer? Can he use that adapter to charge the TomTom?

@David
Cig lighter outlets are good for many amps. It's the chargers that are the issue. Some of the USB charger gadgets that expect to have a USB-A cord plugged in may not supply enough current, but the outlet itself ... no problems.
It sounds as though there's a mechanical fit issue in the i30, but that's odd. I own the U.S. version of that vehicle, and have jammed everything under the sun into mine, including numerous TT adapters.

Hi,

Many thanks for the replies, with regards to the other cig lighter adapter it is slightly longer.

I have had a result with the problem, as i have re-read the car manual again. And by moving some of the items my son has in the centre console, i have found another power socket. This one looks like it is higher rated and it is designed for items like the sat nav, i then plugged in the Tom Tom cigar adapter and the device now works. And on the screen the battery now has the battery icon changed to a lightning symbol, so i am hoping that the device is now charging.
