Start 50
Hello everyone, I have downloaded the latest Europe Map to my computer (v11.00) and am trying to install it to my SatNav. It says 'updating device' but shows no progress occurring. I have a smaller version of the Europe map on the internal memory and wish to install the full Europe map on the installed memory card (16gb) instead. I am using the correct cable between the SatNav and the computer. What am I doing wrong?

Hi

Looks like you're doing nothing wrong.
Did your GPS format the SD card?
Is your SD card well recognized by Mydrive connect is your GPS?

I believe you will find that the Start 50 is a Nav2 device, and uses Home, not MyDrive to update, add maps, etc. It is not necessary for a Nav2 device to reformat cards. Only from Nav3 forward did the device add the Linux ext2 file structure (using DOS partitions - weird, but it works) to the card after initial insertion.

@JourneyMan
I am assuming your Start 50 serial number starts with "GU" or "GZ". The GU models had only 2GB internal memory, and GZ had 4GB. Technically, both are EOL without the ability to add new maps, so this will be interesting. Which serial number prefix does your unit have?

When you fire up Home with your device connected, does it give you the option of internal/external (uSD card) memory as shown in this screen shot?

If you select "Manage my GO (or Start, I guess in your case) do you get a screen like this where, at the bottom, you see "Internal Memory" and "Memory Card"?

How much internal and how much memory card space do those two screens show? If you don't see the memory card on those screens, that question won't mean much, and we'll need to see why your card isn't working first.

@canderson there are Start 50 that connect to mydrive connect.
Ah, right you are. I forgot that this was one of the several unfortunate occasions where TomTom re-used a model name/number for completely different models in completely different generations. In this instance, they skipped a whole generation before re-using it!
I REALLY wish they hadn't done that. Had a Nav2 Start 50 here for a while, which is why it immediately came to mind.

That leaves us unable to instruct @JourneyMan for the moment:

@JourneyMan
So we know for certain which generation Start 50 you own, can you provide us with the first two characters of your serial number? I see you've placed it here in the Nav4 area, but the help you need will be SO different depending upon your answer:

The old (Nav2) Start 50 units are "GU" and "GZ"
The new (Nav4) Start 50 are "VG" "VJ" and "VR"

We may have to revise the screen shots above to match up to MyDrive.

Many thanks for the replies. The serial number starts with VG. I think the model has 8gb internal storage and I've inserted and formatted a 16gb micro SD card (speed class 10). MyDrive connect shows the SatNav and the micro SD card. The micro SD card was formatted by the SatNav successfully.
Currently Europe South v10.95 (smaller map of full map) is installed on the internal memory. There is nothing on the micro SD card.
Many thanks in advance.

Thanks for the confirmation re the "VG" serial. Yup, that's one of the newer ones, so you can ignore all of the "Home" instructions I provided earlier. That only applies to the earlier era Start 50 models that were released back in 2012!

So let's go with the advice from @Willy875

Start by performing a FULL (not "Quick") FAT32 format of the card on your PC.

Turn on your TomTom and when it's up and running, install the uSD card.

When you install a uSD card into a recent model, this screen should appear:

Memory Card Inserted

You can use the memory card for sharing routes or storing maps.
What would you like to use the memory card for?

Routes Maps

and you'll need to select "Maps" button for your purposes.

If all of that isn't happening, the card won't be able to be used.

Many thanks for your reply.

I followed the advice and the formatting was all good, but no luck with the installation.

I'm hesitant to remove the map from the internal memory in case it won't allow me to install a map on the unit afterwards.

The default download folder for Europe v11.00 was ......AppData/Local/TomTom/HOME3/cache in which there appear to be the correct files - 35 of them, totalling 7.15gb.

I know I'm not using TomTom Home, but this is where the files were downloaded.

With my SatNav I've got lifetime maps and I don't want to lose them. Any other ideas are welcome.

Not to worry. When TomTom originally developed MyDrive, they didn't have a name for it yet, and so internally, they were talking about "Home3", and that's why the file structure includes that name.

Follow Willy875's recommendation regarding deleting the cache and starting fresh.

I followed the instructions, but still have the same problem.

It seems to successfully download the map to my PC but then doesn't install it to the SatNav.

It shows a red line on screen which represents the data cable from the PC to the SatNav but doesn't show the progress wheel, which normally shows what percentage has completed as it is installing.:(

If the map installation does not start on the GPS, try disconnecting and then reconnecting the GPS cable several times.

Unfortunately, no luck either.

I seem to remember TomTom Home being easier to use than MyDrive Connect.

I'm starting to wonder if it's because it's trying to install from maps which have been downloaded to the PC.

I don't get the 'Not enough storage space' option box, which would normally allow me to choose 'Use a memory card in your device'

In the past, I downloaded direct to the SatNav. Maybe it's worth going back to that method. I guess I would have to clear the map of the PC again and then untick 'download to computer' in settings.

Presumably, it would offer me v11.00 again and I could try doing a direct install.

Just tried it, but it has made no difference. It still behaves as though the map is on the PC and it's trying to install it to the SatNav, again without the progress wheel. The strange thing is that there is no longer a map on the PC.

Just tried with another PC. Same problem. Should I try deinstalling MyDrive Connect app and reinstalling?

It may be an old version of the Mydrive connect installer, so you risk nothing by uninstalling and then reinstalling Mydrive connect.

It's only an idea if you remove the SD what happens on Mydrive connect?
mydrive connect asks you to make room or add an SD?

Maybe try with a new SD?
