This is by way of a heads up with reference to a previous post on this forum.
I bought this device last week and as we are going to Florida next week also bought a micro sd card to load US maps.

The device would only report that it was reading the card, nothing else happened and the expansion was not seen it MyTomtom.

After much frustration and a chat with Tomtom support (friendly but useless in solving this problem) I subtly changed my search parameters and came upon this thread:
http://discussions.tomtom.com/t5/fo...ge-id/38601/print-single-message/false/page/1

It seems that the solution is to put the device into "recovery mode" after which it recognises and formats the sd card, problem over!

What is supposed to happen with Nav3 devices and a sd slot is this.......

You insert the sd card and the device 'sees' it and offers to format the card, after which it is useable for adding maps.

Recovery mode should not be needed

It may not be needed but we are dealing with Tomtom devices here:)

My new TOMTOM Start 25 did not recognise any micro sd cards inserted in unit.
Tried pre-formatting them in my laptop (FAT32) with no joy.

Tried the recovery method described in you link and now all is well.
After the unit restarted, a message appeared offering to format the card.
My 16gb micro-sd now appears as additonal memory in MY TOMTOM.

Note that I did not switch the unit off as suggested in step 5.
The unit cycled through the whole thing automatically.

Many thanks for link.

I'm glad you found the link useful. This really is an excellent unit, I hope you find it as useful as I have.
