My son works for a large UK Company that delivers LPG Liquid Petroleum Gas to rural properties and businesses, who are not connected to a mains Gas supply.

They drive these very large Tanker lorries filled with thousands of litres of gas, and they all have SatNavs in them similar to TomToms, but are unbranded.
A few weeks ago, a SatNav in one of the lorries burst into flames, luckily there was a driver in the cab who managed to grab it and chuck it out of the window.

I hate to think what could have happened if there had been no driver present, it could have been like a bomb going off.

Would be curious to know what your son could turn up in the way of any and all identifying information on the exterior of one of those devices, especially as you've called them 'unbranded'. There are very few nav device manufacturers outside of China, and they all brand their products. I'm betting we've got a Joe's Taiwanese Garage Shop unit here.,

Sounds like a lithium ion battery issue.

I have had a chat with my son and the only name on them is the name of the company he works for.
As the company has hundreds of vehicles on the road, they were probably a bespoke version designed especially for them.

They were left on charge constantly 24/7, but new rules brought in after the fire says that they have to be removed from the cabs, taken into the office and the batteries removed.

I do agree with you about it being a lithium battery issue. In the UK we have had loads of fires caused by electric bikes and e- scooters being left on charge overnight. Nightmare!!!!

They may not have a manufacturer's name on them, but they're going to have to have something on the exterior that identifies that they made it through CE emissions approvals. If not, that's a huge red flag right there.

Anything he spots in the way of labeling may be useful in identification.

I'm not surprised it caught fire.
GPS probably made in China by an unknown manufacturer, one wonders how customs were able to let GPS into your country?

I will ask him to check but I don’t hold out much hope.

It’s not just dodgy equipment with batteries that catch fire, even stuff made by reputable manufactures catch fire. It even happened to a family member living in France. There are so many rip off copies out there, you don’t always know if you are buying the real thing or not.
