All, what's your thoughts on Sage's Navcore SE post?

For those unfamiliar with the darkside, Navcore SE is the primary hacked navcore used by most of the wares world that:
1) enables all software features on all models. The only restriction is that some features don't work on 32mb ram.
2) enables pirated maps to be used

To me this crosses the line into wares. I would have deleted it without asking first, but David didn't seem to mind as he responded within the thread.

Thoughts, should we delete it?

I was not able to download it to investigate it before you grabbed it -- so I cannot verify that it is a cracked version. I'm just taking your word for it. Given that...

Is David aware of #2, above? It isn't like we're talking about sharing around an otherwise legit copy of Navcore here as has been the case in the past (e.g., getting around stuttering with the Work version as some did until 8.350 appeared). This is another whole kettle of fish, and I don't see how we can permit it to appear here.

Well, I've gotten to know Sage quite well since he joined here (as well as anybody gets to know anybody else on line). He would be the last person to knowingly be involved in warez stuff.

I considered the Navcore version in the same way we all did when we dl 8.204 to get rid of the stuttering problem. A series of pm's awaited me this morning from sage. He was really upset that the thread was locked and that, more importantly, he was being associated with anything unethical. You know my stance on all that. After all, I did put up the anti-warez announcement on the forums.

The bottom line as far as I'm concerned is that I really feel sage did not know that the navcore version he uploaded was a hacked version. If he did, he wouldn't have done it.

That being the case, I quite agree that not only should the thread be locked, the entire thread should be removed.

I have grown to trust both of your judgements quite a great deal (one reason I wanted you guys as SuperMods) and I continue to value and trust it now. I thank you for your input in this matter.

I will delete the thread and let Sage know why.

Again, thank you.

Yes, I know and I did. I also hope Sage understands why I did it. I just finished sending him a long message explaining.

I also told him I am convinced that he did NOT know the implication of the SE version and that non of the mods question his credibility.

Thanks to all for your input. One reason why I wanted (and needed) you guys here. Just for situations like this.

And to mvl........

Yeah, I did go to my 'dark side' source ;)

As soon as I saw the navcore version there, I knew it had to go.

Just woke up - similarly had a couple of PMs from Sage. I tried to explain it in detail to him as well. Hope he understands.

More surprisingly, I got a PM from Mikealder asking what / why this was removed. I'll chat with him for a while, given his level of Tomtom expertise I would have assumed he knew that "Navcore SE" = piracy.

And yes, canderson, this was ttuser's full-fledged SE build.

Going forward I think that all posted "hacks" that result in any of the TomToms effectively being given most/all of the features of a higher end model will have to looked at very closely. It's not like it was a couple years back when TomTom was known to make new features available to older models. Anymore they go out of their way to be reasonably certain that it won't work. Workarounds are going to be getting into gray areas IMO.

Sage feels really badly that he was unaware of the significance of SE cab files and that he got taken in by it.

Hey, we all learn through experience.

It's not like he provided a hack to get Home to show the actual mapshares or anything :):p

I've been with situation in the past when Navcore 7 was hacked for the other units.

I just explain it to the members and they are fine about it.

I also try to eliminate the 'fishing' technique where members let others know where to get these hacked firmwares/maps.

Yep, I think the current situation has been resolved.

I agree that any reference to how to hack that kind of stuff is definitely not appropriate here.

Yeah, to me as well........

He also posted to me screenshots of all the possible voice commands.

He's having fun with it.

Did you pay attention to the routes? When I broght it to his attention, his response was "fastest route my ass" with a few other choice words thrown in. Watch it again and follow the around the block routes. LOL!!

Yeah, he posted in the thread here somewhere the screeshot of his 'navigate to doctor' that took him quite a ways around so as to not turn left.

Yup - gotta love it. The thing put him on a seven minute excursion to go one block to the "nearest restaurant". Must say, I am impressed with the apparent versatility of the voice commands. It would seem that the 740 does things by voice command you can't even do with 8.351 by pushing buttons.

I was less impressed. The voice commands pretty much replicate "quick menu" features, and the "navigate to" menu. Theres a lot more menu items it can't do. Some "Navigate to" items (I forget which, maybe Favorites) only got you to a screen, you had to tap your selection to actually route somewhere.

My 4-year-old accord had a similar range of voice commands. And I could tell the thing to set the climate control temperature and tune to a radio station number. I just assumed navigation had progressed more since then, but I'm since learning that the Acura/Honda nav was one of the most advanced of its time.

I'm not sure what buttons I would push for "navigate to nearest restaurant". Of course, with my luck, it would take me to the closest Denny's.

I did sort Sage's routing issue, though. Sorry to say, it makes perfect sense based upon the TT avoidance of U-Turns. Sage just didn't recognize the U-Turn issue since he wasn't planning to go to the address as the mapping software understood it. I believe this example is making me a believer in the idea that perhaps my left turn issues ARE mostly U-Turn issues -- just that my idea of where I'm going and the map don't entirely agree. I have noted that it burns me most on routing when I'm heading for a business that isn't streetside. I'll bet it's been the same problem... the mapped address is across the wrong side of a median on a divided road, not in some convenient parking lot down where a left turn into an entrance exists just down the road a short distance.
