Please help. I’m looking to buy a TomTom with route recording. All my searching suggests any of the go series should do it but I purchased one today the go classic 5 2nd gen and it didn’t have the feature so I returned it. It looks like it used to be a feature that has been removed. Does anyone know what model I can buy that has it. I’m training to be a driving instructor and want to record routes to practice over again.

On Go Classic, you can save a route.

If you plan your route using your GPS, once planned, you must tap on the route.
A new window will open, click on Manage Route, then Add to Route.

The easiest way is to use Plan-TomTom to plan and save the route.

But this plans the route the way the sat nav thinks is best but a test route is from the test centre around a series of roads and back to the same place. Hence needing to use the record feature.

I need this option.

The displayed option is no longer available on recent GPS devices.

This option allows you to save the route you are currently following.

You're going to need to find something on the used market that pre-dates the current generation.

If I were still hoping for that feature, I'd be looking for a used GO 620 (or 520), Essential or Supreme - any of these whose serial # starts with the letters "ZE", " ZF" or" ZN". Add to that the GO Premium (serial starting with ZR).

Those were also the last TT models to support the custom POI feature in some fashion, another bonus.

So will this one do it? https://amzn.eu/d/8P6SR1x

That would certainly work for you, though I'm not sure where you would ever find one new in box. You'll have to do some scrounging in the used market for any of the generation that will get the job done for you.

To my surprise, the 620 is still for sale on Amazon uk. Order one last night and arrived today. Out of the box it has the feature. However it has insisted on a software update which it is doing now. I am hoping the feature does not go with the update.

It won't. Have my trusty 620 right here, and it's been updated to the latest firmware for quite some time now.
Astounded you're still seeing new 620's new for sale there. How much they asking for them?

It’s £157.77 on Amazon. Here is the link - https://amzn.eu/d/5fiCDpN

Update finished and the record feature is still there. Yippee. And it works just as I was hoping. No need to plan a route or set a route, just hit record, perfect.

The use case for this feature is fantastic. Drive a test centre test route and record it. This can then be shared as a gpx file with learners to practice as many times as they like.

I’m training to be a driving instructor. I can now drive the route with my trainer once and record it and then practice it over and over again.

Thanks so much for your help with finding this, I am super happy with it.

Also, I’ve already been out and recorded a couple of routes and played them back and it works a treat.

There are SO many use models out there that TomTom is now neglecting. Honestly, it's been downhill for many features for not one but a couple of generations of these devices. I would never use the recording feature, but would sorely miss the custom POI feature (and do on all new models). That was the great thing about the 'old' TomTom. They had plenty of features to cover a multitude of use models.

It is crazy. All the driving test centres use the record feature. They record the test route and play it back for the student to follow on test. They are using start 52’s. When the are forced to upgrade, they are going to be snookered. Some people say it’s not a problem as the examiner can just set a destination but that won’t work for two reasons. First the destination and start are the same place, the test centre. Secondly, they do not follow the fasted, quickest or cost effective route, the follow what ever route they want to include the most road features and obstacles the can, hence why without a record feature, it just ain’t going to work. The would be forced to manually map out the route on a gpx tool online and then upload that to their TomTom account and sync with the nav.

Now tha was a long rant

It's not like in France.
In France, you don't need a GPS to get your driver's license.
