Rider2 Map Compatibility

[cimsa717]

Hi All,

I'm in Australia and would like to know what Maps are compatible with the TTR2

eg, can I use TomTom V3 maps or ONE XL maps on my R2 or am I stuck with TTR2 map versions.

I have heard that TTR2 use TeleAtlas maps and UNIX OS.

The reason I ask is that I have a friend and family member with these other TomTom units who have purchased USA and Europe maps for trips they have made overseas and figure If I could borrow them it would save me purchasing them myself.

Any info would be great.

Thanks Greg

I believe that the maps used on the Rider(s) are incompatible with the other devices and visa-versa.

The map compatibility is the same between all Tomtom devices.
I bought maps that were not available for my Rider I. So I selected a Go900 and purchased the Western European map and installed it successfully on my Rider. Sometimes the offered maps even differ between the shop inside of TT-Home and the regular webshop.

The thing is, you buy and download a map while your Tomtom device is connected to your computer/TT-Home. That makes it possible to read out the serial number (or any other unique property) and dynamically insert this as a signature into the map file. The OS compares the device ID with the map ID and if it doesn't match the map isn't accepted.

I tried to share several sd cards with other Tomtom users but they didn't work because the license is bound to the device, i.e. the serial number. That's why Greg's idea won't work.

All Tomtom devices use more or less the same UNIX-like OS. That's why tools like Tripmaster run on any Tomtom device.

Thank guys for the info, I see TomTom have half price on Maps at the moment.

I think I might take up the offer.

Thanks again
