Updating maps on my Go5000 takes well over an hour. Up to the first 50% is terribly slow, progress is 1% per 3 to 5 minutes. The connection is lost a number of times during this process, which leads to broken maps. You only find that out after the update completes. And then you have to try the whole update all over again and pray that it will work this time.

The USB port nor the pc itself does not go into sleep mode, I turned that off. It seems that the device itself has some kind of sleep mode after half an hour when connected via USB.

Does anyone know some way to turn sleep off on the device?

Other tips also welcome, of course.

Think it's your computer, not the device, that's going to sleep during the transfer, thus causing the loss of power to thhe device.

In the Mydrive connect settings, under download, have you checked the box to have the map downloaded to the computer first?

yes.

Not likely, I think.
I keep clicking in MyDrive Connect to keep it awake. In Power management, USB-settings, selective USB-interruption is OFF. Anything else I could check?

I also tap on the device's screen every 20 minutes or so. The ETA will then increase, for example, from 40 minutes to 1 hour and 20 minutes for about 30 seconds, then go back to 40 minutes. Still, the device screen goes dark after some time and then the connection is lost. I unplug from PC, hook it onto a power supply, and press the on button. Some times it comes back on after a few seconds, other times I have to press and hold to reboot. After which I can reconnect and continue installation. I mean, it works, but it should also work without all this tender loving care.

Meanwhile, installation succeeded on the second attempt. About 7 GB.

It looks like a screen timeout when on external power and not in navigation mode. In navigation mode, it's been sitting here for well over an hour and did not go dark.

MyDrive Connect says it's now up-to-date, I assume that also goes for the firmware.
Os version is 3.2.0-something
Bootloader version is 2011.09-something

Anyway. Thanks for the quick replies, guys.

@Rolfb
The GPS battery is no longer holding a charge, and the computer's USB port doesn't provide enough power to keep the GPS on.
Solution: replace the battery.

That's certainly plausible. I did replace it not so long ago, but not with a Official TomTom Battery. OTOH, recently I drove for about an hour with it before I discovered I forgot to put the cigarette lighter plug in.

I have this USB hub with external 2A power supply. Will try that next time. (I know TomTom says No Hubs, but worth a try. Just for the experiment.)
Thanks!

Before updating a map, you can charge your GPS using a wall charger.
Once it's charged for at least an hour, perform the update.

I think we are basically all kinda screwed here .
I did raise it (the exact same issue) in my recent thread: https://www.tomtomforums.com/thread...a-mydrive-connect-dec-2025.35590/#post-215685

but nothing much came out from there - neither from official support

and another not very recent thread: https://www.tomtomforums.com/thread...tdown-during-large-updates.35015/#post-210433

one member advised a PC tweak over there , but neither that will help.

My experience : the unit will go into sleep & needs constant baby-sitting .....no matter what you do or try .
my 2 cents .

Strange.
When your GPS is plugged into the cigarette lighter socket after planning a route, does the GPS turn off during the trip?

Normally, in the MyDrive Connect settings, if you select the option to download the map to your computer first, the map installation on the GPS is faster.

<When your GPS is plugged into the cigarette lighter socket after planning a route, does the GPS turn off during the trip?>
could that be a subtle difference ? During D/L the unit's connected to a Computer getting the power from the USB port - during drive to the lighter socket. would this be why there's always a ''change in it's behaviour'' ?
also during driving the unit knows it's a drive - during d/l , the ''machine idle timeout'' comes into play , ...i think

In my case, no, it's ok when driving, powered from the cigarette lighter socket. As I said before

I have a 5000 series TomTom. If it's simply connected to the computer it will go to sleep during long updates. It can be reconnected to "MyDrive" and updating will continue.

After connecting the TomTom to the computer select a different menu on it to move off the home screen. This I have found stops it from going to sleep.
