 Check you maps and email, write, or call TT customer service!

I am frustrated in dealing with TOM TOM customer service to address several errors (problems) with the latest 3 map versions.

I have a v650 that doesn't have the problems in v665 & 675. I had customer service check the new maps and the problems are still there.

Check yours out. Here are the problems.

1. POI Colleges - check any city. What is shown are Day Care Centers!!!!
Some cities have both DC and only some of the colleges. Check Las Vegas for the Univ of Las Vegas. Check Philadelphia for Lasalle University.

2. POI tourist attractions - try to find the Hoover Dam in Boulder City, CO or through Las VEgas. The Hoover Dam is on my old version 650. I asked CS where did it go?

3. POI Casinos - Doesn't list or have many of the major casinos on the strip in Las Vegas - find the Luxor or Bellagio.

YES there are workarounds to find how to get to some of these places but why are we investing in NEW maps that have less information in the POIs than the older versions. Why must we go to the computer to find out addresses and then enter it into the TOM TOM? Why does TT take away POIs?

I have a TT One but i think this problem crossed models. TT CS suggested that I buy the new maps and use my old card when I wanted to check what the new maps show. How convenient?

Sorry to hear about this frustration.

I don't have the new maps to check and see if this problem is present.
With Mapshare, I hope these missing POIs will appear.
I do hope these POIs will be more complete.

Hi Jim,

I've noticed lots of missing POIs in my 720 as compared to my previous Navigator for Palm version. It won't find a Home Depot or a Lowes near me, and there are a total of 5 stores within 15 miles of here....

I really don't understand this. The only thing I can guess is that because the 720 has the entire North America map loaded, there's not room for the POIs I had in my individual regional maps with the Navigator implementation.

Has anybody found a way to restore POIs to an acceptable level on the 720?

Jim, I believe that one our forum members copied the 6.5 poi.dat file over to the new map folder and it worked.

Jimbo - I don't know how to copy the .dat files to a different map. I'd like to rely on the expertise of the mfg. I called TT again today and couldn't get an answer to what is on the 7.1. Do you believe that Customer Service reps on the phone and the email do not have the new map versions on their system to run checks?

I'm still trying to find out a real answer versus one that is in the manual - they told me today to go to 3rd party sites and download their POIs.

Jimbo is referring to accessing your Navigator's map folder and looking for the poi.dat file.
First backup your 720 poi.dat file and replace the 720's poi.dat file with your Navigator's. I've done this with the 665 POI file replaced with the 650 poi.dat file and it worked for me.
Im not to sure how it is with the Navigator files.

Good Luck

As long as you have done a backup (preferably using Windows Explorer instead of Home), then you can do these 'experiments' with little risk.

We are talking about swapping the poi.dat file. Not very complicated, really.

But if I replace the POI files - do I loose the new restaurants, etc in the new version or can I add the two together?

I just bought a 2G card so I can have the 650 completely separate from the updated/modified versions. I'll have to go through the process of loading things to the 2 G card tonight.:D

If you replaced the poi.dat file with an older map's poi.dat file, yes you will lose the updated poi.dat file because you would be using the older poi.dat. You need to decide which one you think is better. Of course, you can always roll back as long as you have a backup.

There use to be a site (its down now) to create your own poi.dat but it was too complicated for me and involved a lot of steps. This is the url - http://www.tomtomsatnav.info/poidat.html
