New 720 POI issues after map upgrade

Hi everyone,

I bought a new 720 a few days ago. When I took it out of the box I tried doing a lookup for my favorite POI (Borgata Spa & Hotel in Atlantic City, NJ). I plugged the unit into my PC this morning and performed a map upgrade (free since I'm within the 30 day window).

My unit is now up to date with map version 815.2019.

However now doing a POI search for the Borgata results in zero hits. Even when I do a motel/hotel search in Atlantic City and scroll the entire list, the Borgata is not displayed. Even the Harrah's Hotel is not displayed (quite a large establishment).

Now I saw some other threads about people performing some manual POI copies from a file someone sent up to MegaUpload. Is that something I should consider or did the upgrade already give me the larger POI?

Did I reduce my POIs by performing this map upgrade? I vaguely remember after taking the unit out of the box that the MAP version was 7.x something and I was able to find all my POIs in Atlantic City.

Thanks,

POIs from any gps manufacturer are generic and none provide everything for everyone. That said, TT has three general POI database: small one for ONE models with 1GB internal memory provided with USA&Canada map; medium sized one for GO 7x0 models with 2GB internal memory; large one for GO 9x0 models with 4GB internal memory. The latter two come with the North_America maps. There is the larger 9x0 POI database available for download that was posted within the past 3 days if you search for it.

Larger POI for 720

Hi Gilbert, I am quite familiar with POIs varying greatly from manufacturer. My main question was around if anyone else has experienced upgrading their map online on a 720 and losing any of their POIs or not being able to find POIs that they previously could (as is what I experienced).

Your post provides very good info on the size of the POI maps and I will definitely try the larger download as I saw that thread. Being new to 720 and the TomTom line I wanted to tread with caution. Thanks!

POIs that you download from TT Home or other sites are stored in your map folder(s). When upgrading maps, the folder or folder content could have been erased to make room for the new map. This is the reason we always recommend people make a full backup of their TT before doing any upgrade wether it be software or map upgrade. It provides the insurance that, if something goes bad, you can always revert to a working state.

Roishe, I installed the referenced "large POI database" on my 720 and don't see the Borgata Spa & Hotel listed in that one either. I too have seen POIs for things I'm familiar with in my area drop out after alleged "updates" in the past (not just with TomToms). It's possible that the larger database may actually be based on older data. Isn't the Borgata the newest major hotel/casino in Atlantic City? It's also possible that the algorithms use to trim or clean up the master POI database for inclusion into any particular upgrade release could result in a bit of variation, depending on how they are coded...

Hi John, that's quite disappointing. The Borgata was built in 2003 and Harrahs around the same time as well. They are pretty major driving destinations for a lot of people in the Tri-State area. I will contact TomTom and ask them about this. While the address can be found, the fact that MAJOR POIs being "dropped off" are a little alarming. Thanks for your verification.

Roishe - The street the Borgata is on IS in the 815 MAP database, so one could always create a Favorite or direct enter "1 Borgata Way" for a destination in lieu of a POI, and navigate there that way. If one believes in conspiracy theories, I wonder if it's possible that Ronald Thump (or whatever that guy's name is) could somehow be coercing TT into losing POIs of the serious competition...
