First I will just detail my equipment
Kenwood DMX6523S Digital Multimedia Receiver (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible.
Samsung A54 (SM-A546E/DS) - Android V16
Tom Tom Maps & Traffic v12.69.1 (Navigation engine version 2.1.0-rc15)

NOTE: These issues only happen when I am generally driving, using Tom Tom as a moving map. They do not happen when navigating to a programmed destination.

When Android Auto starts I get the usual Tom Tom screen like this

Stopped.jpg

STOPPED.JPG

I start driving, and within 15 to 30 seconds, it changes to this.

FS No Speeds.jpg

FS NO SPEEDS.JPG
Tom Tom has detected that I'm now driving, and shows the moving map in full screen, but it doesn't show me any speed limits.

If I now tap the Tom Tom icon at the bottom of the screen, it does this...

Split Screen with speeds.jpg

SPLIT SCREEN WITH SPEEDS.JPG
This is the "split screen", it does show speeds, but if I tap the screen or the Tom Tom icon, it switches back to FS NO SPEEDS

Eventually it does show speeds on the full screen...

... but it can take anything from 15 to 30 minutes before this happens.

Finally, and most annoyingly, whenever I stop for traffic lights or a stop sign waiting for a gap in the traffic, if I am stationary for more than about 30 seconds, the screen returns to "STOPPED" (Zoomed out, no speed limit displayed)

Is this some kind of problem with my Settings on the Tom Tom App? I have research the Zoom issue, and several results have suggested going to "Settings > Appearance > Automatic Zoom" and choosing the "None" option which is supposed to disable automatic zooming, but I don't even have "Appearance" in my settings.

Question: Is the application installed on your phone or on your car radio?

The radio is connected to the phone via wifi as a "Connected Device" in Settings
You mentioned connecting your phone to your car radio via Wi-Fi. Unless I'm mistaken, the connection is only made via Bluetooth or USB cable.

If you use the app without Android Auto, do the speed limits appear on your phone?

AIUI, Bluetooth makes the initial connection, and then it connects wifi as well

On my phone, the Bluetooth connection says...

DMX6523S

The WiFi connection says

MonitorWithReceiver613630
Connected via Android Auto

Yes

I have the same problem with the free, ex Amigo app on my Android phone in the UK. This never used to happen, I have changed nothing, so this is something TomTom has changed in a recent update. Well done TomTom : an update no-one asked for that makes things worse ! Message to TomTom : If this is the best you can do please stop meddling, and leave things alone in future. And thanks to smartcooky for describing the problem so succinctly.

So, if you're using the older Amigo app, which hasn't been updated to the latest version of TomTom,

wouldn't the problem be with the Android Auto app itself?

Willy,

No, I am using the latest version of the free app. That's why I said "ex" Amigo, i.e. the current free app that used to be called Amigo. I don't use Android Auto, so the problem is nothing to do with Android Auto.

Whatever change TomTom recently made to whatever system smartcooky is using was also made to the current free app, because it causes the same problem. TomTom has decided that when you are using it in moving map mode and you are stopped at the traffic lights, you don't need it anymore, so it "zooms out", which is stupid. In the UK we are effectively not supposed to touch our phones when driving, so I have to stop the car, apply the hand brake, and switch off the engine before I can sort out the mess TomTom has made.

What I would like to understand is what does Android Auto actually do with regards to the TomTom App

1. Is it simply displaying what the TomTom App would be displaying on the mobile phone screen (i.e. effectively projecting the phone screen?)

2. If so, why is my full screen displaying different information from my split screen.

3. With reference to 2. above and my OP, if the full screen eventually goes to FS WITH SPEEDS.JPG, (it doesn't always) and if I then tap the screen at any time, it changes to FS NO SPEEDS.JPG but after about 15 seconds, it goes back all by itself to FS WITH SPEEDS.JPG.

With Android Auto, both applications will have the same display behavior.

The difference between the two is that the GO Expert app has more options available than the TomTom app.
