TomTom Model(s)
Tomtom GO for Android
Tomtom just released the new summer maps, version 850. We created a new thread here for discussion on these new maps.

Before you update your maps: We recommend the following steps to prepare yourself, prior to a map upgrade:

1) Make an explorer/finder backup. With any change this big on a Tomtom, it's always a good thing to back up first. Backup instructions are here.
2) After your backup, upgrade to the latest app. Earlier apps had issues with map installs, so you should update your app to the latest version before attempting a map upgrade. To update your app, choose "Update my Device" in Tomtom HOME, and if an application is offered, check the application and uncheck everything else, and click update. Keep repeating these steps until HOME has no newer application to offer.

How to download your map:
- Maps must be downloaded via Tomtom HOME. You can install Tomtom HOME from this link.
- If you're device has been used for less than 30 days and you haven't downloaded a map before: You should get a free map under the "Latest map guarantee". To use this guarantee, open Tomtom HOME, and go to Tools -> Latest Map Guarantee
- If you have an active or lifetime map subscription: Open HOME, log in with your email/password if not auto-logged in, and go to "Update my device". The new map should be offered automatically for download.
- Otherwise: If you want a new map you have to purchase one. Open Tomtom HOME, go to "Add maps", and follow the purchase steps. You can buy a single map, or you can buy the "map update service", which bundles current and future maps for a discounted price. Note that purchases are processed through Netherlands servers, so you often pay more than the quoted price due to foreign credit card fees. Also, you may need to call the card company first and tell them you plan to make a purchase from a Netherlands website, so that the charge won't deny.

Issues to consider when updating maps:
- Reserve enough time for the map update. Maps are 1 to 2 gigs in size, and can take a long time to install. You'll need time to download 1-2 gigs from Tomtom's servers, and then you'll need an additional 20-60 minutes to copy the map from your computer to your Tomtom.
- If you try to download when everyone else is trying on June 3rd, the download could take up to 4 hours due to server congestion. Also, it may abort due to the overload. If it aborts, go to "update my device" and the download should resume from where it left off
- If you're device has app 8.x, you'll lose favorites and settings after the map update. To restore the from your backup (as recommended above), follow these steps, and then follow these steps.
- Inevitably, something breaks for certain models in the map update process. If you have an issue, check out this thread, to see if others are reporting a similar issue, and if anyone has found a workaround/fix.

I have a 335TM with lifetime maps. I plugged mine in this morning and Home offered the new map. I will be backing up and downloading tonight.

Tomtom phone support fixed my problem. There was something corrupted on my (well actually gatorguy's) account, and they fixed it. The map's downloading now.

Gatorguy - Tomtom support may be sending you an "incident closed" email :)

Another thing - the Western Europe map is still at the 845 level.

My guess is that because of all the issues with the growing Western Europe map 845 not fitting on the 2GB 750 and START devices, Tomtom is spending extra time compressing map 850. Maybe that's why everyone else was delayed from May, and Tomtom finally didn't want to wait and released 850 for all the other geographies.

Aha - good news. :D

I just bought a new TomTom GO 550 LIVE yesterday so have the Latest Map Guarantee thing still to use. I'll probably wait about a week before I exercise it as I want to be absolutely sure I use my one-shot-offer to get the latest map. :)

All the best,
Andrew.

850 roads

If tomtom is telling us that about 20% of the roads change each year, how come ONLY 2500 miles of road was added in the USA. Is TeleAtlas deserting us

I read the quote as 2500 roads have lane guidance added. I hope they've updated way more roads than that for non-lane guidance. They usually say they update over a million roads globally each quarter.

850 Maps

Nearing first complete week of owning 740TM. Connected to computer and turn-on right after reading above emails.

System prompted right away and said downloads were available. Did the smart thing and backed up device memory and SD card into their own folder on my desktop before starting 850map download. All went swimingly although at 10AM Pacific Daylight Time 2PM Eastern Daylight Time in US, time to download and install in my case stretched to 2.5hr.

One question, though, if you don't mind. WRT using explorer to back up instead of TT Home. All has worked perfectly for me each time and I am really happy with the process. BUT TO MY QUESTION. Since I have seen elsewhere in the forums indication where zipped file from TT is stored, has anyone thought of also backing up those zip files (just in case b/u of device and sd card as-installed files gets trashed) so one could go back to map of choice, whenever?

As long as you have your day 01 back up nice and safe on the PC and a copy on DVD (just in case the PC lets go) you will be fine, Home will let you download a map you already own for a period of 12 months so even a formatted device combined with a new PC it simple to get back up to date using the day 01 back up from DVD/ CD and Home to get the updated maps/ Navcore application and voices etc.

If you collect and store everything for multiple devices (like I do) you better make sure you have a large spare hard drive in the PC, my TomTom index folder is currently running at just over 240GB used capacity and thats without the v850 maps as yet! - Mike

If you wish to copy the downloaded map cab file with its contents from here:
C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Downloads\complete\maps\

to an auxiliary storage like a thumb drive, of course you could.

I'm an old holdout with a TomTom GO700 (the darn thing won't die to justify buying something new!). Before upgrading my map to v850, I did my usual backup through TomTom Home (making a copy of the Backup01 folder first to preserve my previous backup).

*AFTER* upgrading to v850, I noticed that when browsing the contents of my GO700 hard drive that it had a file MapSettings.old. I had yet to reboot my GO700 so the a MapSettings.cfg file had not been created yet. I checked both my previous Backup01 folder and my latest Backup01 folder and neither contained the MapSettings.old file.

So it appears that...finally...when upgrading your maps through TomTom Home that the MapSettings.cfg file is renamed to MapSettings.old. So to get back your favorites and settings, all you have to do is AFTER REBOOTING YOUR TOMTOM reconnect it to your PC and rename MapSettings.old to MapSettings.cfg.

That's a big deal for me since I'm sometimes a bad boy and forget to backup my GO700 before doing a quarterly map upgrade. And it's about time TomTom programmers did this one simple little thing that has been plaguing map upgrades ever since I bought my TomTom GO700 new many years ago!

Update Question

I got my 340XL less than a month ago. I backed up the original files, then updated everything. I don't know what map version I had originally but I have 845.2670 now. TomTom Home doesn't show a map update for me. From your original post it looks like you only get one update in the first 30 days. If I had known 850 was coming out I wouldn't have updated to 845. I don't suppose if I copy my original files back on the the device it would let me get 850, would it? I'm guessing they keep track of what's been downloaded to who.

Thanks.

Slick, there was an announcement at the top of every forum here since May 14th advising of the 'imminent' release of the 850 maps ...... (somewhat delayed as it turned out).

I'm afraid that indeed you do get one kick at the can for the LMG and it seems you used yours already.

Thanks for the reply. I got it in early May, before the announcement. I thought there was just the 30 day limitation until I read this post. Oh, well.

I bought the 335Tm right after they went on sale at Amazon. Lifetime Maps and traffic. I entered the activation code into Home when I first bought it and it seems to have worked. I did get the 845 map through Home the second day I had it. Now i have 850 downloaded and copying over via Home right now. I don't know why other people have had problems with the lifetime maps.

No problem here with the lifetime maps, just took 4 hours for download and another 1/2 hour for installation.
