TomTom Model(s)
GO Premium X, GO 5000
I made use of one of my old tomtom devices, a GO 5000, for use on a motorcycle. It's mounted with USB power and I have a simple rain cover if necessary. I'm not so worried about theft of such an old device, so I leave it on the bike.

It's been fine for years. As the speed cameras don't change much in the UK I tend not to have a subscription, unless I'm going on a weekend trip or something, then I'll sign up for a month or so.

  • It has always shown speed cameras, even without a subscription. It just obviously didn't receive the updates on new locations, which is fine.
This has been the case for years - The Go 5000 would keep the static speed camera database and use it.
  • Yesterday I did a routine update, first time for about 4 months. There was a software update. Since then, the speed cameras have gone completely.
It appears they have been actively deleted by the update.

If you have similar, perhaps only let a map update happen.

Edit: My SIM card is working.

The functionality of TomTom models has changed, speed camera services are linked to a subscription.
When a speed camera subscription expires, the TomTom device stops giving alerts.

Same with my old VIA. I did not pay for the speed cameras, they were not updated but not deleted, but I think last year with a map update big brother deleted the speed camera files from my device. 🥹😁

Oh I do understand. Yet nothing in the contract or terms and conditions I signed up to allows for this. I just posted to share as others might want to hold off on updating.

But thinking further - Just as there is no term or condition which allows for the removal of TomTom map content if you do not pay for map updates, (they have the technology to do this, but have chosen not to), why is tomtom camera content treated differently? Answer is the business model, but customers should be informed how and why some content is different.

Once content has been provided as part of an initial contract, it's reasonable that continued use is part of the contract. That's the case with maps. The method to pay to have cameras back is "renew" not "reinstate". I looked for terms about deletion if there is not a live subscription and couldn't find anything.

It seems reasonable that if you are going to allow maps to remain on the device, whatever makes traffic cameras different should be written somewhere.

It's probably worth a ticket with TomTom to find their view.

The GO 5000 maps are valid for life; TomTom can't delete them.

For speed cameras, if you don't update the map, they remain on the GPS.

It's like your phone plan: if you don't pay, you can't use it anymore.

For your information, speed cameras are embedded on the map, so an update will automatically delete them, without a subscription.
