Can obf files with their attendant bitmaps (symbols) be inserted into the Start62 as I am accustomed to do with my very old Go

Do you mean ov2 files? And does the Start 62 use MyDriveConnect? If so, you can add ov2 files using MyDrive but not the associated .bmp files. See the video below at the 2 min 10 sec mark for the adding of ov2 files. (also, they don't show in the driving view as they used to with the xxl device).

Thanks, DHN. How I managed "obf" instead of ov2 is anyone's guess. Still you got there, well done!

Oh dear, what you are telling me is somewhat depressing. The ability to insert ones own files with their attendant bitmaps is fundamental to my/our use of a satnav.

Do you, or indeed anyone else, know of a current model that does allow those insertions. My wife, who is chief satnav watcher and listener to (I don't instantly know right from left and she translates to "your side/my side") just can not get it together with any other make, we have tried several in the past and she just did not like them, though I could not understand her reasoning, when the "bee is in the bonnet" there is no reasoning with her.

No current TomTom model allows for associated bmp files to be loaded along with the ov2 files. Nor will any current model show a custom ov2 file in driving view.

@dhn
There IS a TomTom model that allows for this, but it's rather expensive. The Bridge models all support *.ov2 with associated icons, though they are now handled as *.png files instead of *.bmp. It's a VERY impressive device, but as noted, with a price tag to match.

@Harry Ridsdale
Can you describe a bit more about your particular use model for satnav that requires this feature?

Thanks Canderson.

I have a motorhome (RV). In Europe there are places called "Aires de service" in France and much of western Europe and "Stellplatz" in Germany and associated countries. These are places where motorhomes can park (often for free) and can get drinking water and deposit their waste, usually for a small charge but not infrequently for free. There are web sites that give or sell databases of these sites in various formats but for TomTom in the form of an ov2 file with an attendant bitmap (*.bmp) to display on the screen. Of course, one needs other things such as ones daily bread, milk and other foodstuffs, fuel, entertainment, garage facilities and whatever else one might want. There are other databases that cover these things, also with their attendant symbols. There are lists of restaurants within chains, the symbol being the sign of that chain (Mcdonalds big M for instance) and we find these things very useful.

My old XXL is becoming very out dated and is very slow with a battery which is now hardly any better than the failed original it replaced and which never lasted more than a few minutes to begin with. I must find a replacement soon and it must have the ability to accept and display what I have described.

Oh, and what gave you got against WD40?

Regards, Harry

None of the current models apart from Bridge can perform as you wish. It's been a sore point for a long time with many of us.
However ...
All of the current models accept normal TomTom *.ov2 files, and although they are not displayed in the normal 'driving view' map, if you select on the device your custom POI category from a menu of POIs, it is possible to see them all on a 2D map where your current position is also shown. So it's not ideal compared to the 'old way', but it can be made to work.

As for WD40, it's a LONG story having to do with another forum years ago. There was a lady who traveled on a particular cruise line often, and generated so much grief that she was asked not to return. In an even longer story unrelated to her cruise experiences, she was told she was never permitted to carry mace again, and so opted for WD40. PM with more info to follow.

Hmmm, sounds dicey to me. The old way worked so well. I shall have to investigate other manufacturers.
The WD40 as a substitute for mace thing is something I have heard before and I do carry a small can in easy reach of the door of my motorhome, just in case, though I have yet to feel a threat in more than seven years of wild camping

Coincident?
A friend just sent me this:

" Who says we didn't have great adds in years gone by!!!

This is a genuine Ad from 1964 when WD-40 was first released.
(Their Ad department sure had a delightful way with words.)"

I was mistaken. Even Bridge units will not show driving view POI at this time.

Using the POI view instead of driving view works pretty well if you are looking for a stop in advance since it does show your current position and those of your POI. You can then touch one and navigate to it. But like you, I still miss the 'old way' where I don't have to do anything special to get them to appear.

It's not a question of getting the POI files to the 62, it's whether they can be displayed wherever they might appear in the driving map view. Yes, MyDrive takes care of the importation function.

As an aside, here's a sample of how it looks when you select a POI category the way I had described earlier (see attached photo). Of course, you can only select one POI category at a time. Sorry that it's a night view, but it's a bit late here.

No canderson, but thanks for the attempt it is much appreciated, but that just will not do.

Get the picture:-

We are driving through Germany and my wife, who is watching the XXL says "there is a Netto coming up and we need some milk and bread and there is a Stellplatz not much further on and a little off to my side, do we want it?" I say "what kind of stellplatz" and she, looking at the symbol says "it is a services only" whereupon I say "excellent we'll go there right after Netto." and we do.

When we are on the road this kind of scenario happens daily at least.

Yours Harry

Understood. I also have a use model that requires selected POI to appear during driving, and it's a sore point with me as well.
