Just received a new VIA 1510 and I get the message waiting for valid gps signal, is there something I need to do to correct this message?

Wait a bit? A brand new one (or one moved a considerable distance, or one not fired up for a very long time) in 'open sky' can, worst case, take 12-1/2 minutes to acquire the 'almanac' data required to know where all of the satellites are.
