Go 6200 lifetime SIM

I attached the TomTom marketing for my GO Premium navigation system. They also disabled my SIM card by start of this year. There is no mentioning that SIM cards will get disabled after 5 years. It says "TomTom Services via Built-in SIM".

They say that it's limited by the life of the product. Well, it still lives and as far as I understood TomTom Services are still available but now require external internet connection to work. Let's face reality: They disabled SIM to save costs...

Crikey. Some of you could moan for Britain!

All that has been lost is the convenient 2G connection to TT. But once you've replaced that with a connection to your phone, in theory all you're out of pocket for is a few Mb's of data which in this day and age is nothing.

What we need to keep an eye on is if TT will still honour free updates; speed cameras, traffic etc. If you buy a new TT device or use the phone app, these services require a subscription, like so many software packages now. This is where the money is made.

So if we still get our 6200/5200 traffic services for free in return for the slight inconvenience of connecting them to our phones to achieve that, I'm all for it. But I'm sure it won't last for too long.

I disagree as it's a headache and inconvenient to always pair with phone everytime we need to use it.

Like others here I failed to make a bluetooth connection work; the phone is connected but the TT receives no internet.
Using my phone as a hotspot works very well, but I do have to turn the hotspot on and subsequently off when finished, from the pull down quick settings on my Samsung phone. That is the only inconvenience of this method, but my 5200 reliably connects and then receives any new traffic information even quicker than before when using the internal SIM card which only used the now blocked 2G connection, although 2G is still possible via the phone when all else fails.

I removed the disabled Vodafone sim and installed an EE sim. For now all working, until EE turn off their 2G.

Was it one of these? If so, which package did you select?

Please stop spreading this nonsense here.
TomTom has already switched off the map for me and many others, even though G2 is still active for us until 2030!
Indeed, same here (Netherlands). It,s a disgrace how TT switches off the main feature of our devices!

I have an old EE sim that gets 100mb of data each month for free. However I'd imagine any sim card will work assuming the local operator has supporting 2G network still active. I have this morning tested with a RWG sim (MVNO running on NOW, which in turn runs on EE), and that also works well.

Hey folks just a little update, I've managed to get a very reliable wifi hotspot without having to manually toggle/connect everytime getting out the car.

Works via "routines" on your android phone. Unsure about iPhone. Everytime I start car my phone now turns on WiFi hotspot when it connects to my stereo. Works great now. I drive up to 8-9 hours per day in and out the van and no connection issues at all now.

Hoping this helps out.

Interesting. On my Galaxy S20 (Android 13), I use a utility called Tasker which allows me to do the same thing, but isn't native to the device. When my phone sees my car's Bluetooth, it flips on the WiFi hotspot for the TomTom. I started using it before Routines became available on Samsung phones, so I just let it run. It provides a lot of other options - more than Routines, but isn't necessary now for this specific task.

Probably worth a tutorial here showing how to use it (Routines) for this purpose.

This is excellent. With this automation, getting a connection to the TT is as easy as before with the internal SIM, but with a much quicker connection. Works for me.
