I get this problem all the time, even when the device is connected to power in the car. Last week, by pressing the on-off button in some magic way, I got a status screen, but that showed battery at 84% charge, even though the device kept powering off. Tonight it won't stay working at all, even though the status shows 100%.

Do I disbelieve the status screen and change the battery anyway, or is there some other problem?

To get the screen, hold the on-off button down while it is turning on.

There's a difference between battery voltage and battery capacity (ability to deliver current over time). A battery with almost no capacity can show a 'full' charge voltage.
Am guessing your battery is finally toast after 8+ years or so.

I think most people would assume that "battery charge level 100%" meant the battery was good, and not that it was 100% of some greatly reduced capacity. But I accept that the battery is dead, and have ordered a replacement.

Although this is lithium technology, you can relate it to charging NiMH cells in a good charger. You will see that the voltage does come up to something normal (e.g., 1.6V) at the end, but the capacity may be greatly reduced over many charging/use cycles to the point where the cell isn't any good. That is also possible with lithium battery technology, and may be your situation.
