Expense of updating maps

I was given a TT XL IQR v2 last Christmas, with a map of Europe.

Within a very few months I was being invited by TT to "update" the map. In fact it wasn't an update because you can't do that unless you first buy a *new* map. With a generous  25% discount, the current price is 56 euro, which is a large fraction of the original purchase price.

Since the thing won't let me navigate to a chosen latitude/longitude, nor ask it to deviate from its chosen route, I might as well buy another GPS. Obviously it won't be a TT.

You can add additional functionality to that model with a menu hack. See here:

but I'm not sure lat/long navigation is one of them. Anyway, read through the thread in the link.

Map update plans consist of 2 charges:
1. A cost to get your present map to the current level (which is 880)
2. The cost for 4 more updates from the current map when you've upgraded (bullet 1).

And maps from any other manufacturer will be a similar price anyway....

Like any bit of technology these days, the content costs are usually higher than the hardware costs.

It isn't, and that geek stuff just makes the thing even more difficult to use.

That's what I'm complaining about. It should be free for equipment that's only a few months old. If rival companies are playing the same game, someone should be investigating: it just isn't fair trade.

If you don't want to have to use a hack to get the functionality, then you just have to pay more in the first place and buy a full-featured model.

If you buy a paper road atlas, will they give you the next few editions for free?
