Do I need nav 8 to use newer maps? I have nav 7 is so how to get it?

I have now Nav 7.166.8497 , is this ok to get current maps for the tom tomm one xl? Does it matter if I use nav 8? I hear people saying they can put nav 8 on the one xl and it works great
