Changing "Sound off" icon?

Is there any way to change the stupidly large "Sound Off" icon that shows in the lower left corner of the screen?

Sorry mine wasn't supposed to be so curt. What i meant was that i haven't found a way myself to turn off the icon so if i want it quiet i just turn the volume down as low as possible. Then i get silence with no big sound off icon.
