Can't connect to any ipod

I have tried with a Nano and my Blackberry, but I cannot get the 530 to connect, it just spins and never connects. Anyone got any clues?
 
The only way to connect to an iPOD is via the dedicated iPOD cable, or are you trying to connect a phone to the TomTom for hands free/ data connection? - Mike

I have the correct cable, but the tomtom screen just shows the spinning wheel, nothing ever happens, tried it with 2 different ipods, I must assume its faulty
