TomTom Model(s)
TomTom Navigation for Android
Hi

If I use the TomTom Navigation app on the highway in sections with average speed control, the average speed between two controls is displayed in the Route Bar.

If I connect the phone to the car via Android auto, the average speed disappears (As far as I can remember, I've never seen it.)
Is this a normal behavior of the app?
Having the average speed information is essential where there is a proper control of the average speed.

Same thing with Amigo

Thanks

My Go Discover used to show the average speed zone with speed displayed ... regrettably, it no longer does this. I believe it stopped a couple of updates ago. It was very useful but alas is no longer shown.

Thanks for your reply

I need confirmation from those who use TomTom Navigation with Android Auto on their car.

This is yet another example of TomTom removing useful items. I understand TomTom has withdrawn from the US market because no one wants their product. I think TomTom is in big financial trouble as a company and is trying to save money on research and updates. I strongly recommend when you want to replace your current device that you look at other options such as google maps powered devices or Garmin. i think that in the near future TomTom will go bust and all updates will stop, perhaps even devices will stop working because TomTom can't pay the fees to use satellites

@RobU
Tomtom is neither bankrupt nor in serious financial difficulty. It is focusing on its development in the automotive sector.

Tomtom Group revenue increased in the first quarter of 2025.

I hope some decision-makers from the automotive sector are reading this and other forums so they know what they're dealing with!

In the future, it will be especially important to carefully check whether TT technology is installed when buying a car. Then steer clear of the car. There's a risk that TT will simply deactivate important paid features of the car!

Meanwhile, many car manufacturers and traffic management companies have signed contracts with TomTom.
If TomTom disappears, there will no longer be integrated GPS in cars.

That's just my opinion.

Thanks to all for the replies.

Maps does not give any indication of speed cameras or routes subject to average speed checks.

I ask again kindly if anyone who uses TomTom Navigation (or Amigo) with Android Auto has the same problem I reported above.

Thank you again

Hi, I've used the App via Android auto for years.

The average speed has never been displayed (unfortunately, it is on car play!).

Now the Route bar has disappeared (very unfortunate!).

I think the route bar will be back soon via the next update and it would be great if they would provide the average speed too.

Hello xpev,
I have the same complaint. Unfortunately, I haven’t found any way to display the average speed with Android Auto.
The average speed feature works perfectly with Apple CarPlay (which I can use with my company phone)... so it’s disappointing that when I use the same car with my personal phone (Pixel 8 running Android) I can’t access this useful feature.

Your last post was in May — have you found any alternative in the meantime?
Thanks.

what I recommend is this: update Google Play System, (not the same as Play Store), PlaySTore Apps, System software, then CLEAR CACHE and DATA of TOmtom, then UNinstall tom tom. REBOOT, and after reboot, Reinstall TT. Then should solve it. Recently many things got updated and your app got corrupted. These steps will fix it. Make sure LOCATION is also turned to ALWAYS and PRECISE after Tom reinstalled in PERMISSIONS, Let me know after all steps done.

Thanks, @pesik90 — I went through your checklist step by step and tested it

Results on my setup (Pixel 8):
  1. TomTom GO Expert (black icon, paid version)
I do see some general improvements after the clean reinstall, but the average speed in average-speed sections still doesn’t show when the app is running via Android Auto. On the phone screen it works; on Android Auto it doesn’t.
  2. TomTom GO Navigation (white icon, free tier)
With Android Auto, the average speed does appear. However this version is much more limited vs Expert: there’s no Route Bar with incidents/updates along the way and, when the average speed is shown, ETA and remaining distance disappear from the Android Auto view.

So for now my takeaway is: Expert on Android Auto still lacks the average-speed display, while the free GO shows it but with important trade-offs on the AA UI. I really hope TomTom will bring average-speed on AA to the paid Expert app (and ideally without hiding ETA/distance).

So the only current solution you have on AA is to change to TomTom GO Navigation (white icon, free tier) between average speed cameras, correct? Then you can view your average speed. Not great, but would this work?

You’re right, switching to GO (white icon, free tier) just for the average-speed areas does work on Android Auto.

My only concern is battery/heat: keeping two nav apps around (even if one is in the background) means two clients hitting GPS + data, which can put the phone under stress, worse with wireless Android Auto
