TomTom Model(s)
7" GO GEN 2
I've just received my new unit. I tried to update my maps, only to find i only have Europe. First problem was it told me I needed to delete some maps to allow room to update my European map. Which i did, however there seems to be no way to download a map of Australia....help

What model of GO 7 do you have?

Normally, to update the map installed on the GPS, you don't need to delete it.

To add a map from another country, simply go to
Main Menu > Settings > Maps and Display > Downloaded Maps > In the right corner, you will see the option > Add.
The TomTom must not be connected to the computer via the USB cable, otherwise the "Add" option will not be highlighted.

I have the 7" GO Generation 2. I had to delete maps because the machine said there was not enough memory to update the europe map.
As for your instructions, I have been down that path (over 15 years using TT) the only maps available to download or countries in Europe, that I've deleted already. When I click the add button, European maps come up, nothing from anywhere else on the planet, no america, Canada, New Zealand, nothing
I've done a factory reset, then a soft reset (using on/off button on the back...no change)
Im at my wits end

You don't specify the exact model of GPS you have.

If it's the 7-inch GO Navigator 2nd generation, for example, this GPS only has a European map.

I think the model details are "8YE7.002.100.1" IT ALSO SAYS MODEL NUMBER 4YD70 On the box

So its not possible to use it in Australia?

Unfortunately, it won't let me. As soon as I say I'm from Australia, it tells me they don't ship to Australia

Maybe there's a translation problem?

What I want to show you is this GPS model you purchased?
Link above.

Thanks very much for your help, I'm returning the unit tomorrow.

BTW, I tried the link and it simply says it doesn't ship to Australia

@Camerand

TomTom has abandoned PND sales in many of their old markets, including APAC and all of North America. Sadly, that's clear for Australia from the results of this url > https://www.tomtom.com/en_au/navigation/car-gps/

Not clear how you got a new GO in Australia - that would be a 'gray market' purchase. Support in such cases can be an issue.

Where did you purchase it?

It was purchased through Amazon, much to my disgust. When I re read the description, it clearly talks about European maps, but it never occurred to me that world maps wouldn't be available. I've now arranged to return the unit and I've purchased another one, still a Tom Tom, but I made sure it had world maps hahaha.

Once again, thanks very much for your help
Cheers,
John

It appears that TomTom are in trouble and contracting their markets. I live in Thailand I have my old Go which I bought many years ago in the UK. I can download any map in the world including the East Asian one which includes Thailand. I am wondering if they are also withdrawing from the far east and would be in trouble if I had to buy a new one. Frankly I would use Google maps but the screen on my phone is too small and I can't hear it with the windows down I can't find a device with a large screen which I can use Google maps so I am considering buying an Android tablet, installing it in my car instead of the radio. I can then use Google maps on a big screen, and hear the instructions through my car speakers. I will also be able to browse the internet, play music and listen to online radio

It seems that it was just the model I bought. It's only good for Europe for some reason. I use 3 sat nav units for my work, driving around Australia, 2 Tom Tom's and a Garmin, so I'm well used to their use etc. I've now bought another one, not a 7" but a 6" with world maps ( I made sure first haha)
As for Google maps, to me they are next to useless because once you lose internet access, they don't work, whereas the sat navs work off satellites so, no internet needed
Thanks for your imput, cheers

Glad you've got one that covers you area now, though it must be the remnants left in the distribution channel there in Australia.

To clarify somthing: Devices that use Google maps and devices like a TomTom both "work off satellites" to establish their own location, but no device gets its map data from a GPS satellite.

The difference is whether the device stores the map data locally (like a TomTom or even its GO app for the phone) or must obtain it in realtime from 'online' somewhere.

Thanks for that, I'm well aware that satellites only provide triangulation and not data. That's fully understood. My point was google maps on a mobile phone or Tablet will only work when connected to the internet. Yes you can download the map and use it without an 8nternet connection, however, you can only use the routes downloaded.
Anyway, all's well that ends well
Cheers,
John
