TomTom Model(s)
TomTom`1
I have had this unit about 3 years and it's never seen a car. My daughter bought it for her son and they were trying to see how it worked and that was it, it hasn't worked since and no clue on whats wrong with it., She gave it to me and I just discovered it again and would like to do something with it. About all I can get it to do is get the green lite to work when I plug it in to the computer USB. Nothing on the screen. I'm wondering if it worth it to invest in a repair. Thanks for any input.

@Corporal
Would help to know what model you have in hand. Having not been used for an extended period, once charged, it may indeed require a button press of several seconds to wake the unit up and get it started from a cold boot. Also, we need to know what model you have so we can sort out the application you will need to use to update it.
Easiest way is to tell us the first two characters of the unit serial number. From that, we'll know exactly what you've got.

I have tried several times tuning it on doing exactly what you suggested.
Did you turn it on? There is usually a small switch on the unit. Press and hold for 2-3 seconds and see what happens.

I can believe I left the model number off, wow, that would help wouldn't it? MODEL # TOMTOM ONE THIRD EDITION (4N01.002) As far as the S/N goes, there isn't anything that says serial number so I'll give all the numbers I see on the unit; under the logo is Y24298A81179, Then among some letters and symbols is N14644

On the ONE 3rd, you need to hold down the power button. After it's charged, press and hold the button for as much as 20 seconds until you see the TomTom logo (and probably hear the 'drums'), then release immediately.

I charged it for quite a while and just tried to turn it on per your suggestion and still there is nothing on the screen.

I should mention that when I plug it in for charging a little green lite comes on that is next to the on-off button

That much is good - at least we know it's getting power. Bad news is that even with the long power button press, nothing happens. Makes me think that the battery is so flat that it can no longer be charged. Like many devices these days, connecting external power doesn't assure power to the brains of the unit. They're designed to run off a battery that may, or may not, be being charged at the time.

A ONE 3rd is a lot older than 3 years. That unit was released for 2007. If the 20+ second button press beings no results at all, I'm afraid that battery is toast. You game for a replacement? There are instructions available. It's an option....

I got an "error encountered" when I clicked on that link. I don't think I'll have any problem getting a batter so let me do that and I'll be back. Even though this unit came out in 2007, like I said before, it never seen a car and stayed in a box for about 4 years before I got it and it stayed in the same box until now. I certainly would like to do something with it, I know it's not a toy.

When a TomTom is new they only put a little bit of charge in it. Yours has become so depleted that it's more than likely died as previously said. You can get replacements on eBay if you want to go down that route. If it works after you replace the battery then you're home free!

Yes. I have a new battery on order and expect it sometimes this week, so we'll see if that's the problem. I will advise the forum of the results. Thanks for your input.

Got my new battery and installed it. No change. My unit still won't turn on. The battery that came with the unit is 3.7v 1000mAh and the one they sent me is 3.7v 1450mAh which I suppose doesn't make that much difference but I will have to send it back because it is too thick.

@Corporal
OK - we're down to the possibility that (at a minimum) a zener diode has gone up in smoke and prevents your battery from charging.
So... while you're already in there, please inspect components for charring. The 'usual suspect' on the ONE models is, as I recall, D5.
Refer to this thread for a photo that one of our users took after the fact >> https://www.tomtomforums.com/threads/tomtom-v3.30530/

I found the D5 and there is no evidence of any heat anywheree on this board. I'm assuming it's a one-sided board. I was able to put a meter on the battery and it reads full so I'm convinced I don't have a problem with the battery on that score but I am going to have to return it. It's thicker by 1/16th of an inch than the original and I can't close the unit without forcing it and I won't. Anyhow, right now still looking for an answer.

Running out of ideas here, I'm afraid. In a way, sorry to hear it wasn't D5. That's a fairly easy fix for someone with a decent touch with an iron.

Reading back from post #1, it appears that there's one thing we've never asked ... when you plug the device to your PC, is it recognized as a USB device? Should show up as an external drive. Only asking because there's always the possibility that it's alive, but that the screen backlight isn't.

I know what you mean and no, I have never seen anything like that and just tried again with no results.
