GO 400
As per recent help from DHN, I have created a new account for my new GO 400. Upon connecting to MyDrive (via my computer), I see the following:-

My Updates and Items

Map Share Community Map update - 7Mb
* Version 15.301 - 337Mb
Map Europe (version 9.51) - 6272Mb

Below this it shows the European Map with an Update button.

MyDrive tells me I have 5912Mb used, and 1193Mb free.

Apart from other problems, this pending update is where I ran into an endless loop of failures on the previous GO 400, so I am anxious to avoid any possibility of screwing up this one!

So at this point, how do I proceed? Do I just click the Update Selected button (under My Updates and Items), or do I click the Update button under the European Map? Do I need to somehow get rid of the existing map (presumably 5912MB ?) first?

Any help appreciated...

I'd go get a Sandisk 8 or 16 gb microsdhc card and let the device format the microcard.

Thanks for swift reply.

Hit a snag. The new GO 400 refuses to lock in the SDHC card. And yes I have got it in the right way round - even tried another card. Just got the returns authorisation, so it's on its way back to supplier.

So when I get the replacement, which button should I go for, and do I need to somehow delete the existing map?

Once you have the card successfully installed to make space available, you should be able to add and swap maps as desired using MyDrive.

Ok, thanks for that.

Seems weird to me that as it comes out of the box the TomTom cannot be updated without purchasing extra memory. It's like HP saying, "Sorry, you can't install any of the latest Windows 8.1 security patches and upgrades on your brand new computer without buying a new hard disk drive".

As it happens, I have several SDHC cards handy, but surely many folk would just expect to be able to update their device without having go and buy more hardware.

That was not a rant at you guys for offering me your help...

And leading on from that...

So I have the 'old' map still in main system RAM and the 'new' map on the SDHC card. How does the GO 400 know which to use?

Oh, you probably can do the updates without the card but that's now. Future maps tend to grow in size. I would download JUST the application first. Then the map by itself. And then the mapshares.

Fine. I can appreciate maps can grow in size with each new edition, more features etc. I am not sure what percentage of the current 5912Mb is being used up by the existing map, but I'd guess some of that figure will be for the operating system. So the new map is bigger in size. Ordinarily, without an SDHC card, would you expect the MyDrive software to overwrite the old map with the new one? Or does it have to delete the old one first?

Sorry to be asking so many (probably inane) questions, but it's the only way I'll get any sort of understanding of what happens inside the box!

Ok fine - thanks both.

You showed in post # 1 that the new map alone is 6272 MB.
The 950/951 maps jumped in size.

This is a 'just out of interest' question. Existing system shows 1193 Mb free. Do you think map v.9.51 at 6272 Mb will overwrite the existing map version (sorry don't know what it was) together with what's required for the system? Or will it really require that extra SDHC card?

I have 8 Gb, 16 Gb and 32 Gb cards available - will they all be recognised by the GO 400?

I think your 16 GB card will be just fine, providing it is at leas a class 6.
If the existing map have the same name it will be overwritten if there is enough space on the card else, it will put the new map on the SD card and delete the old one.

Make a couple of simple checks before proceeding.

Pluggesd in and MyDrive Connect running click on My Content.
At the bottom you will see how much used and free space there is on the Internal and SD memory.
Scan down on that page to see what else is on your device, including name and number of the map.

Seems weird to me that as it comes out of the box the TomTom cannot be updated without purchasing extra memory.
4GB units are going to be a thing of the past pretty soon just because of this. However, you will have had the option of running different map zones. These should have been offered by MyDrive, and permit you to shuffle segments of Europe (or North America) on/off the device as they are needed. It's only a problem if you're planning an exceptionally wide ranging trip, and then it's only the addition of the uSD card that solves the problem.

No problem in any case -- none of US work for TomTom!

Ok, useful info there - thanks.

I'm pretty sure they were all bought as Class 10 cards.

32 Gb is Samsung, marked as Class 10
16 Gb - no manufacturer, but marked as Class 10
8 Gb - no manufacturer, no Class marked, but bought as a Class 10, and works ok in a video camera.

Not sure there's any way to identify a card manufacturer, unless from the small faint number printed on the back...

I'd try the SanDisk card first. See if the device formats it AND MyDriveConnect then 'sees' it.

Once I get the replacement GO 400 I'll do that. I take it you mean the Samsung card...?

Oh, my error. Guess I shouldn't be answering so early in the morning.

In fact, perhaps try the 16 gb card and see if it works properly.
