A fried asked if I could update his XL SN RH2428C**** (AKTZY); App 8.014; GPS v1.21, Boot 5.5019; Map 'Western_US_and_Canada' v905.4854.
I thought I could add a new account, using HOME, opened it and connected.
I was greeted with this error message:

I then connected the 930 and got the same however, going the the webpage I got something like this:

After deleting HOME through windows and downloading/installing afresh I still get that first error message on my 930 after connecting but when clicking the pinned icon at Start HOME opens properly and can be used.

Following along the lines of Andy_P's post I made a new account but I am still getting the same fault message when connected but it remains fetal for the XL.

The device itself works properly and I am quite impressed with it.
 
Just curious. Do you HAVE an account from your friend with which to update his unit? Is it registered? I see no mention of any account info for that unit in your posts.

In the last shot, it asks you to log in with a different account or create a new account. Whichever the answer to the above, that would be the normal approach to a 2nd unit. With his unit connected, were you ever able to get Home to display that?

He got it from his nephew 2 years ago.
If he had an account I would have used it. He uses it rarely, only when going to a strange place. He hadn't even heard about QuickGPSFix or Mapshares.
When I told him about it he asked if I could update for him. I told him that I would try but didn't think it would work.
The whole thing started when he heard Samantha speaking the name of the next road. He told me that he had a TomTom but that doesn't name the next road.
He'll be surprised when he gets it back, even as is, as I now switched it to Samantha.

No, his unit, instead of opening HOME, jumps straight to the error screen displayed.
 
Weird.
After posting the above I connected the device again HOME opened without the error page.
I proceeded to associate that device with the new account made last night and installed QuickGPSFix or Mapshares.

After disconnecting properly and switching on the device I got a red screen saying that the voice selected is not available. Checking Voices, Samantha was checked and she called out phrases each time I tapped the Test button.
Will test at lunch time if it works on the road. (Zero satellites at the moment.)

Guess I'd forgotten that Samantha was in use way back then on the "S" models. Let us know where that goes!
 
It didn't. She says 'turn left', 'you have arrived at your destination' but does not announce the next street name.
He is quite happy as is, particularly as I now entered a Home location for him, used the coordinates of the gate house of the Condo to which he will be moving in 5 weeks time.

I suppose, should he ever want a new map, he will have to upgrade the OS in stages.

The serial number indicates that it's a 330S, so it should have one computer voice somewhere.
