TomTom Model(s)
GO 500 2405TM XXL540TM
In US, out of the box I hooked 630 up to PS tom tom home. Screen said to update map. After over an hour I was told not enough memory. I then take 630 to car. Screen says no map found. But map shows up when 630 is connected to the PC. Now tom tom home says I need an activation code to activate the map.Map # is 845.2645. size is 1.67G
Where do I get such a code?
Any suggestions or directions? I went to Tom Tom help but did not find any...

Thanks

I found product code but

the TT activation page says the Product code consists of 3 groups of 5 characters and digits"

What I found the CD envelope is 3 sets of of numbers and letters but not 5 in each of the three groups??

You don't need a product code as TomTom Home automatically applies any required activation code to the download with the map, it sounds like something has failed to work in this case, there have been a number of posts today on a few GPS forums about failed map downloads so I wonder if the server went AWOL for a time?

Can you look at the PC using Windows Explorer and locate the folder where TomTom stores downloads, it should be Documents/ TomTom/ Home/ Download/ Complete/ Map in this folder you will find a North_America folder open it and can you see a file named activation_map_12345.cab (the 12345 will differ but you should get the idea) - do you have this file of not on the PC? - Mike

Yes I have the map on the pc but TOm TOM asks for an activation code when I try to put it on the 630.

I will add that it also shows up when I look at the 630 device files on the PC. TT says I should delete it b/c it is not activated.
Thanks for your help.

Try this. with the unit connected to the computer, use Explorer to make a complete backup copy of your unit's contents. Don't use Home.

Now, check in the location that Mike pointed out to see if there is a compressed 630 zipped map folder. If there is, (and you have doubled checked the backup is on the computer, then delete the complete North_America (or USA_Canada) map folder from the computer.

Then, look here to install the map without using Home:
https://www.tomtomforums.com/genera...nstall-downloaded-map-without-using-home.html

Here's a zip file but it doesn't have 630. Is this ok to rely on?

download\complete\map\North_America_2GB\North_America_2GB.zip

There should also be a file named activation_map_12345.zip in the same folder on your PC, if this is missing you will need to contact TomTom support as without this file the map won't work - Mike

Within my North_America_2GB_1 folder in the ....\downloads\complete\maps folder are the following contents:
map.jpg

It is the highlighted (compressed) file that Mike is referring to. The file within it must be extracted to the map folder on the unit to make the map activated.

Yes, I have this file on my PC

C:\Documents and Settings\sjs.SENNOTTM-FEF935\My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Download\complete\map\North_America_2GB\activation_map_51227.cab

And on the 630 is 1 map - North America 2Gb, size 1700, Version 845.2645. The TTHome section called "Manage Your Nav Device" says "This item cannot be used because it needs to be activated."

AS I said earlier, out of the box when I hooked the 630 to the PC TThome I was told to download an up to date map. (Which made sense to me.) It started the download but after an hour + it said there was not enough memory. So should I indeed remove the map on the 630? and If so how do I get the one on the pc onto the 630?

Thank you again, Fred

Instructions sound ok BUT the unit's memory is almost full. It has only 200MB free and the map is 1700MB.

As I asked above, should I delete the map that's on the unit now?
Thanks again, Fred

The manual install will overwrite the files that are there but you can remove the complete contents of the map folder -- after the backup -- but don't delete the folder itself.

After you've done your backup, the easiest steps are to go to "Manage my GO" in HOME and remove the map from the device, then remove all computer voices except for one.

Then go to add maps in HOME, and the downloaded map should be on the list as "on my computer". With the freed up space HOME should install it with no problems.

All set after second call to support

2nd guy had very simple solution.
1. he told me that if the map download size was not exactly 1657.3 MB the download didn't work. Sure enough mine was slightly larger.
2. delete map on device.
3. Go to Tools on Home and click on "use latest map guarantee".
It worked fine.
Thanks for your help here.

So now I'm a GPS newbie. I almost rear end cars b/c I'm looking at the 630

I bought the 630 b/c we are going to Ireland in May. So my next task is to download a Europe map.
I did buy a 4Gig SD card. I decide I did not need an ultra fast one like are better for cameras. Was I correct?

I did read that I need to add the TT app to the sd card along with the map. Any other ideas?

Your model does NOT require the application on a sdhc card. It'll see a map installed on it as if it were on internal.

Thanks for the guidance. hopefully I can just report back to you that the download and activation was uneventful.

Most current SDHC cards are fast enough to function on a Tomtom. The faster the card, the faster Tomtom will plan a route using a map stored on the card. If it's a short trip, it's probably not worth the added cost of a faster card. If you use it every day for a long time, then maybe it's worth it.
