Please help, we had our go 720 stolen it had in it all my favourites plus an sd card with usa maps on it.
I am pretty certain that I have backed up the device on my pc using tomtom home (when I search on my pc a lot of files are found) now can someone explain in simple terms if I buy the new go 5000 is there away that I can transfer my favourites (remember we don't have the old sat nav) from pc to the new device and how would I do that?

Also as I had bought the usa map for about 30 pounds quite a few years ago is there a way of getting that onto a new go 5000 device either by getting it from a backup on my pc or contacting tomtom and asking for the map for free as I had already bought it on an old device?

If you do have a backup of your unit, there is a file in your map folder called mapsettings.cfg. It is possible to extract your favorites from that (along with recent destinations and a few other locations), and eventually, you will be able to save those back to a 5000 as a POI file. Right now, TomTom is still working on support for POI on these most recent models.

So it will require some patience for TomTom to get the bugs worked out of POI support before it's possible. Meanwhile, DO look for that mapsettings.cfg file and make sure you've got a copy of it tucked away safely.

The USA map won't transfer over, they are licensed to the serial number they are purchased with. I haven't heard of anyone successful in asking for a free map from Tomtom, but you never know.

Alternatively, within a couple weeks, the GO5000 software will be launched for Android. If you have a suitable phone, that software will include worldwide mapping and traffic/speedcams at a single annual subscription price, and will be far cheaper then buying a GO5000 plus USA maps.
