I've not had much trouble with my TomTom XL-340TM, but today I updated my unit to the newest Navcore or firmware 9.401. Seemed to go fine, but while connected to HOME, I wanted to use 'operate my go' to prevent reboot that often occurs after firmware update. I got the message, Home needs to download a small application first. Fine, I see this after each firmware update. But this time I get an error (see text below) and the file doesn't download.

ERROR: Installation of the add-on failed.

I tried again with same result.

Some background...

I do not have Chrome browser installed and sure hope that's not required. Don't need any google spy stuff on my PC.

My version of HOME says it's ver 10 – but that's because the version that came out a year ago forced us to take firmware updates. Remember that? My version of HOME is actually 2.8.0.2146 I believe. Since I have an old TomTom 3rd edition with itinerary planing, I don't want to update HOME where firmware update is forced.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. :)

Since you decided to move to application 9.041 anyway, what happens if you do indeed uninstall your version of Home, get the newest at tomtom/home (which would have forced an app update to 9.401) and see if the emulator works then?

Hi dhn, thanks for replying,

9.401 is for my XL-340. I updated to that after reading the forum and didn't see any problems with it.

My TT-3rd edition is still on ver 7.51 I think. Yes, that means a very old map too, but still useful around town sometimes.

If I update HOME, then I'll be forced to update the firmware on my 3rd edtion. So I'd rather not do that if at all possible.

Hopefully the 'chrome' line in the error message above doesn't mean I have to have Chrome installed. :(

Any other suggestions?

Thanks dhn,

But... I don't think you read my first post too well. I posted in that thread you linked to... post #5 in fact and a couple more times. I have the 'hack' you're referring to... change the "xul" to a higher number so I wouldn't be forced to update HOME. That's why I mentioned my HOME says ver. 10. I changed the 'xul' file with notepad.

Maybe someone else is having the same problem in not getting the 'plugin' after firmware update. This only shows up if you try to "operate my unit (or go)".

Or... is there another way to get the plugin?? I only need it if my TomTom starts the reboot problem—which usually happens after a new map install. I was going to install the new map today, but have to hold off on that because of this problem.

Thanks for any help.

@Rick
That 'plug-in' is the emulator that Home uses to mimic your device - exactly the tool you were probably needing, too! Usually, a firmware update of the magnitude of the 9.400/9.401 code requires a new emulator so that it looks and operates like your unit does. All of the changes in the user interface and operation need to be reflected in the emulator.

A current version of Home should include it, which is what dhn is trying to get you to download from scratch. You'll want to apply the old hack again if you want to avoid updating your ONE.

Thanks Canderson,

Yes, I know the plug-in is what I need. But I can't get it, I get the error. That's why I'm posting here.

With the new ver firmware (9.401) I know I need a new plug-in but I get the error. I know from that thread dhn linked to (and that I posted in several times), that a number of other people have used the 'hack' to keep from having to get a newer HOME. Seems to me you did that too... or am I mistaken??

If I download a newer ver of HOME, hacking that one won't help at all because then I can't update my TomTom 3rd edition without being forced to update the 3rd's firmware... which will kill my itinerary planing and dual-boot. My XL-335 will probably work fine.

When I updated to 9.4 (not 9.41) a few months ago, I was able to get the new plug-in without any problems. So why now am I getting this error? It's been the same ver of HOME for a year now.

Thanks.

Three possibilities I can think of..

1. The new emulator add-on doesn't work with your old version of Home. No solution to that except to accept the new version of Home.

OR

2. You have a corrupt version of the emulator and it's stopping it being re-downloaded
Try deleting the latest folder in
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\TomTom\HOME\Profiles\ p9rcf8vf.default\extensions

3. Do you have access to a second PC, so you could keep your old version of Home on one and put the new version on the other?

Hi Andy,

I have an iPad, but as you probably that won't work. I have an image back-up of my PC that I take every week, but I think you're thinking about another PC to update my old 3rd edition.

Yesterday I tried running the emulator for my 3rd edition and it said it needed to download a plug-in. This surprised me as my 3rd edition is still running an app that is 2 or 3 years old.

I'll try that folder and get back to this thread. Thanks.

Hi Andy,

I'm not sure what exact file(s) or folders you're suggesting I try to delete. From the looks of it, there are quite a few navcore stuff that will be erased. Also, the folder name you suggested looks different on mine. It shows, "hj23mvs2.default". (see image below).

Maybe I just need to bite the bullet and updated to a the latest HOME and not bother updating my old 3rd edition.

Thanks.

Hi Rick... a sensible move to question me before continuing!

First, you're in the right place.
My location is:
C:\Documents and Settings\Andy\Application Data\TomTom\HOME\Profiles\ p9rcf8vf.default\extensions

... and in my first reply i changed my real name to username, but forgot to mention that the profile folder has a randomly generated name (Mozilla-based stuff does that... Firefox is just the same), so your "hj23mvs2.default" is the equivalent of my "p9rcf8vf.default".

So no worries there....

Now, what's in there:

DON'T delete everything between the arrows in your picture.

Just the stuff in

What I meant you to delete are all the folders in "extensions" called "Navcore....".
These are NOT the actual navcore program, but the "Operate my device" files for the Home Emulator for that particular Navcore version.

Those are the ones to delete

The one called "tyre" is to add the link to start the 'Tyre' POI management program directly from the Home front page - so you can forget about that. Leave it where it is.

The only odd one that I don't have, is the one for Navcore 9.401 which is in a different sub-directory "staged-xpis". That's bound to be because I haven't bothered to run the Home emulator since I got v9.401.
But if you have a look inside the folder and the contents look similar to all the other emulator add-on folders, then I reckon that is safe to delete as well.

As always, if you are at all worried, don't physically delete stuff, but move it somewhere else entirely such as a memory stick or CD-R, just for safe keeping.

Basically, get them off the C: drive and then see if Home has another attempt to download the right one.

Thanks Andy,

The file that is stored in 'staged-xpis' folder is dated the same date as plug-in failed to install... or 3-9-12. It's a folder (that I shared in the image earlier) labeled: "[email protected]".

Inside that folder is only one file and 26,905K in size and is labeled "tmp.xpi". Looks like maybe it didn't extract or something? That is if it's supposed to look like the other sub-dir above it.

Thanks. Just trying to be careful.

It does sound like it.
Go on... try deleting the whole "Navcore.9.401........" folder (or more precisely get it off the c drive to somewhere else) and see if the download works this time.

Also, you have a PM

Thanks Andy, (also got your PM and replied)

Well, I tried deleting the whole folder... "9.401 etc" and it still failed to install. Home downloaded a file which took maybe 30 secs but then gave the same error. Checked the files and it looked exactly the same. Then I deleted the folder upstream from that... "staged-xpis" (including sub-folder 9.401) and tried the plug-in install again. Same result. HOME made a new folder with the same temp file inside that looked like it didn't extract or what ever.

So, maybe I have no choice but to upgrade HOME?

I'm going to wait until tomorrow for the upgrade of HOME... unless someone else has a suggestion???

I'll probably change the hack back in the ini file (or what ever it's called) and then update HOME.

Thanks again.

Update...

Hi Andy,

I bit the bullet and updated HOME2 to current version... 2.8.3.2499. Last year when I 'hacked' the ini file, I saved a copy of the old file as "oldini" which said it was 2.8.1.2218. Evidently there's something in the plug-in for 9.401 needed to 'operate my unit' that checks version of HOME so the file wouldn't open or extract. Now that I'm on the newest vers of HOME, it installed fine. File structure looks correct now (see attached image).

I just won't be able to get anymore map share updates on my old 3rd edition without being forced to take the newer firmware (which will break the itinerary planning). Thankfully I don't use my old 3rd edition too often anyway. But... I'll be able to safely install the new map on my XL-335 without worries of reboot problem that can now be cleared by running the emulator.

Thanks for your help Andy.:)

I just replied to your PM with another suggestion, but too late now!

Looks like you need to find a friend or relative who'll let you put your old version of Home onto their PC!

Thanks... but part of this is I'm getting old (my wife says getting???). I sometimes hate new things as there always seems to be some unexpected problem(s) with newer stuff. Comes from working as Systems Specialist (hardware-software) for 30 years with the FAA I think.

I appreciate your help.
