It has been suggested many times that we encourage users to tell us where they are from when they sign up - it wasn't possible until recently, so now I've added a drop-down box so that members can select their country. You can see the flag next to my name.

Of course, if you're somewhere huge like the USA you may want to refine this a little by mentioning your state in your location.

It's show to all new members signing up, but if you'd like to add it manually, visit this page and choose your country from the list :)

I have forgotten what new users see and hope it would almost be compulsory.
I know there are some forums where one cannot post without a name, area and country.

Thanks

It's not compulsory, and I'd be hesitant to do so, as I know that it would put members off from registering when we start asking for more info. At the moment, the only thing required is a username, e-mail address and password. The location is requested (and explained why it is needed), plus there's options to specify gender and date of birth (it's part of the forum software, and I don't see the need for it in this case).

The problem is that for many questions posed, the answers are specific to a particular region of the world. As moderators, we must too often grab a peek at the user's IP address to know how to answer a question!

ARE there any other 'Colorado' out there? If so,. must be relatively obscure.
My larger concern is when there's no location data of any sort. I find the textual information easier to spot at a glance than a tiny little 16x11 pixel flag that I might not even recognize at that size.
As I don't spend enough time in Europe very far east, there are also many flags in that area that I'd not be certain I'd recognize in any case. Zsolt would know this one, but ...

Because some country names are so long, I couldn't get it to display alongside, but if it's not recognisable it should be possible to mouse-over the flag and a text popup will appear :). Not ideal, but should help if there's some we're unfamiliar with.
