Tomtom's XL LIVE just cleared FCC testing today. Hopefully that means a US HD traffic launch is coming soon.
The XL LIVE appears to be the same device currently on sale in Europe, which is essentially an XL 340 with the GO 740's built in GPRS modem and SIM card. The specs for the European XL LIVE are
here. They received approval for a TTS and non-TTS version.
The device will run dual-band 850/1900 GSM/GPRS - which means it can operate on either AT&T or T-mobile's 2G network.
They put a temporary hold on pictures and the user manual until 9/28/09. Maybe this date has some significance (or maybe not). It's a week after the "Future of Navigation" announcement.
Although, to prevent anyone's hopes from getting too high - both the HD traffic antenna and the GO x20-HD (720/920 with HD traffic antenna bundled in the box) were approved last year and never made it to market (yet).
Americans, do you want to have to throw away all your existing GPS devices, and be forced to buy newer more expensive ones? If not, contact Congress and the FCC, see here.
