I installed new map (845) on my Go 920. When I browse my unit, I can see that the map is there but when I try to use the map, it says that the map needs to be activated.

Can anyone tell me how to activate this new map?

Tank you.

Activation is automatically caried out using the Home software, did you download and install the map using the TomTom Home software? - Mike

Hi

If I install a new 845 map (say Canada or the US) does that new map erase the existing older map and take it's place?
Also, where are the maps stored? I assume they must be on the internal memory when it came from the factory because the Canada and US were on and I didn't have an SD card installed.
I have a GO 630, can anyone direct me to the procedure or where to find it for installing a new map? Thanks for any answers!

When you first buy a unit, the then current map is indeed stored on the unit when the image is flashed at the factory. We then suggest you make a complete Explorer, not Home, backup of its contents .... as a safety net.

When you upgrade the map, it first gets installed on your computer in compressed form here:
C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Downloads\complete\maps\

The Home installation process then attempts to overwrite the existing map with the contents of the newer (such as 845) map. Sometimes, things go wrong and you are left with a partial install and no apparent maps at all (which is why the backup is made....)

Also, sometimes in the process, Home will inform you there isn't enough space (when there is) and tells you to start deleting some files on your unit to make the new install fit. Or, it has been known that the vital .meta.dct file never got extracted by Home from the compressed file and so the new map doesn't get activated.

Bottom line is many don't even use Home for the map install. A way to do that is here:
How to install a downloaded map without using Home

Thanksfor the answer!! In the 100 or so pages that come on the CD that comes with unit when you buy it, this forum seems to the only place to get necessary information like you and the other members give. Keep it up and thanks.
